The Preserve at Tidewater is located in Sneads Ferry, a former fishing village that is now a part of Onslow County. Because our slice of paradise is so close to the coast, we have our choice of beaches when it comes to swimming, kayaking, and exploring. North Topsail Beach

North Topsail Beach (pronounced “Tops’l†by the locals) is located on Topsail Island, just off US Highway 17 and halfway between Wilmington and Jacksonville. It has a rich and eventful history, and many believe the name Topsail comes from pirates who would hide behind the island, where their topsails weren’t visible from sea. Today, there aren’t any real pirates on the Island (at least, not that we know of), and North Topsail Beach in particular is well known as a friendly, family oriented place where the preservation of the island and beaches is a top concern. Because of this, the area is beautiful, pristine, and enjoyable year round.

Hammocks Beach State Park

It doesn’t get much better than Hammocks Beach State Park. Attractions include seashell hunting, year-round fishing, primitive camping, and covered picnic benches. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, there is also a convenient concession stand in case you don’t want to pack your own snacks and drinks. If you’re a true nature buff, then you’ll be happy to know that Hammocks Beach State Park is also a nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. Local park rangers often give presentations and exhibits to help beach-goers learn about and appreciate these turtles, as well as the other fauna and flora in the area. Bear Island

For the ultimate getaway, nothing beats Bear Island. Remote and secluded, it’s just a short kayak ride or paddleboard away. Once you arrive on this natural barrier island, you’ll enjoy birds and wildlife, a pristine salt marsh, a crystal coast, and a perfect stretch of sand to bask in the sun and frolic in the waves.
